Why does oil taste so disgusting?

I was trying to drink some olive oil and vegetable oil earlier and it just tastes so terrible. I threw up all over the place and I still can't get the flavour out of my mouth and throat. This happens every time I drink oil and I only drank 1/4 a cup. Why is it so nasty?
